There was a time when in telecom industry the key strength of an operator was the number of towers which they acquired. Then when most of the mammoth companies equated the number of towers by getting into tower sharing mode, the market strength for organizations became the competitive pricing. With tariffs reaching rock bottom owing the ultra competitive market, the differentiator for a customer became the customer services which an operator offered. Now when most of the companies are ensuring a base minimum systems and processes guaranteeing customer service, what is the edge these telecom operators have today to beat one another?
Technology, strategies, service – all the key factors can be copied, but what one can’t snatch from a winning organization is the deep inherent people-leading strength. The best organizations are those who put executive at the tasks of picking up good men and getting them do what organization wants them to do without interfering.
In times to come ‘developmental leadership paradigm’ is the only key where in knowledge workers can be groomed in. The organization of this millennium will seek leaders who are just not project drivers but visionaries who can show people path for their own grown. HR function is seeking people who understand what career planning for an individual is, what succession planning for an organization is, and how Leaders can converge both to make people envision their personal growth in organizational well being.
Innovation distinguishes between a leader and a follower. Innovation has no limits. The only limit is your imagination. It’s time for you to begin thinking out of the box. If you are involved in a growing industry, think of ways to become more efficient; more customer friendly; and easier to do business with.
Organizations of tomorrow would seek leaders who are ready to be a yardstick of quality. Some people aren’t used to an environment where excellence is expected. There is no shortcut to excellence. You will have to make the commitment to make excellence your priority. Use your talents, abilities, and skills in the best way possible and get ahead of others by giving that little extra. Live by a higher standard and pay attention to the details that really do make the difference. Excellence is not difficult – simply decide right now to give it your best shot – and you will be amazed with what life gives you back.

Organizations have understood that the leaders who will make organizations click are the ones who are in deep love for their vocation. “Do what you love.” Seek out an occupation that gives you a sense of meaning, direction and satisfaction in life. Having a sense of purpose and striving towards goals gives life meaning, direction and satisfaction. It not only contributes to health and longevity, but also makes you feel better in difficult times.
Leaders of tomorrow Live in a way that is ethically responsible. Try to make a difference in this world and contribute to the higher good. You’ll find it gives more meaning to your life and it’s a great antidote to boredom. There is always so much to be done. And talk to others about what you are doing. Don’t preach or be self-righteous, or fanatical about it, that just puts people off, but at the same time, don’t be shy about setting an example, and use opportunities that arise to let others know what you are doing.
Finally commenting about new era leadership, Steve Jobs once said: “There’s a phrase in Buddhism, ‘Beginner’s mind.’ It’s wonderful to have a beginner’s mind.”
It is the kind of mind that can see things as they are, which step by step and in a flash can realize the original nature of everything. Beginner’s mind is Zen practice in action. It is the mind that is innocent of preconceptions and expectations, judgments and prejudices. Think of beginner’s mind as the mind that faces life like a small child, full of curiosity and wonder and amazement.
Let’s envision that the future generations when they will look forward for their bosses they will find an earnest yearning for learning, basic hunger for innovation, passion and deep sense of belonging to the community that they seek all benefits from.

Changing Trends in Social Media

It is good news for enterprises that the well known ‘Social’ Media is slowly becoming more commercial. It is moving from homes to offices and board rooms. This was predicted by the experts on the basis of increasing traffic to these social media sites. According to an estimate, 25% of the total web traffic is directed to Facebook only. What was considered earlier a fad is calling for mature strategies from serious marketers.


Social media is slowly becoming a cohesive experience. Hence corporate are looking at an integrated approach to use all the social media tools be it blogging or microblogging, social networking, online videos, message boards and wikis, depending on their business requirement. The fight is the same as earlier i.e. ‘getting customer attention’. However tricks and tools being used are changing.

Among the individual users, the social media is moving from desktops and notebooks to mobile phones. With more and more social media enabled mobile phones in the market, this year it is expected that the number of users of mobile web will increase to 1 billion. Soon, even your non-smoker colleagues will go out on a cigarette (read social media) breaks while they are at work.

As women rule the social media domain, they are increasingly becoming the prime decision maker in household purchases.

Corporate actions have specially increased in Twitter, bulletin boards, online videos and blogging. Companies are specially keeping an eye on their brand image in these social media tools.

The companies are forced to form the social media policy; ROI on social media is the ‘buzz’ word getting emphasized more in the board meetings. Even the baby boomers have to understand where they customers are present in the social media sphere.

Also, it is not just the marketers who are interested in social media domain. These tools are being used for recruitment, employee evaluation, public relations, and customer service. As the future of any business is e-business, importance of social media is bound to grow in future.

Social Media Success Stories

Social media is bringing multidirectional change in our society. Be it culture or politics, relationships or PR, marketing or customer service- no field is left untouched. This led to the enthusiasm in marketers for using them for building and promoting brands, getting customer attention. As a businessman you must be eager to know how to use social media for your business. There is no dearth of success stories on the net; successes that have been achieved by the use of social media. This publicity created through online discussion forums has gone to an extent that the Costco fan page in Facebook was created by one of the shoppers and out of the several pages present today some attract more than 50,000 fans.

BestBuy has been using blogs, networking tools, videos and forum to communicate with its customers, update them with the latest news and build brand awareness. It is almost everywhere.



The Chief Marketing Officer maintains his blog ‘Barry Judge Blog’ which is an essential part of the social media strategy and updates the customers on what’s new. The discussion forums are meant for sharing information about tech related product such as games, computers, T.V., appliances, cameras, audios etc. To make the environment of the forum stimulating, there are sections like ‘Customer service’, ‘Meet the Moderator’ and ‘Reward points’.



Apart from the Facebook fan page and the wall to get customer feedback, there is ‘Shop + Share’ tab to let the viewers go through the promotions. The twitter microblogs are used for latest offers, news, product releases and information about new store location.



BestBuy connect is meant for centralization of customer inputs from tweets, feeds, Facebook walls and blogs maintained by BestBuy employees. Hence employees are able to connect to the customers. BestBuy IdeaX community is used for discussion on new ideas between the customers and the employees. There is also a mechanism to vote for the best ideas. Last but not the least is the humorous promotional videos posted on YouTube. 3. USAA

USAA is a company that provides financial services and insurance to military people. At this time when the insurance companies are facing challenges due to expensive healthcare systems, USAA has been trying to find out a solution through social media by communicating with the customers. It is using its Facebook pages to communicate credit card fees to the customers. Members of this fan page love the openness of the company. Twitter is used for posting news updates about the products.



In April 2009, it launched a social media site called ‘What’s on your mind’ (https://www.usaa.com/inet/ent_utils/McStaticPages?key=about_woym_migration). It is meant to increase communication among the USAA members. The members can post their reviews and ratings about the various USAA products. There is also a section for personal finance advice and articles related to them. The main website of USAA has a discussion forum too. 4. Burger King

Burger King’s marketing campaign called ‘sacrifice ten friends’ was indeed a viral campaign. The tool with the name ‘sacrifice ten friends’ was put on Facebook. It said that one can get a free whopper in exchange of 10 friends. With the spread of social media, you get connected to several people you hardly ever communicate with. Hence there were 20,000 people who sacrificed 200,000 Facebook friends for a sandwich in a short span of time.



Facebook stopped this application on the basis of privacy concerns and this creative campaign came to an end. This gives the lesson that one needs to visualize the limit to which a marketing strategy can go.



5. Canadian tire

Canadian tire is the name for family of retail and financial services. It is the most shopped retailer in Canada with more than 1,000 stores and gas bars in Canada. The customer service representatives answer to the query of customers over the phone and through email. Through a service called Ask and Answer done through the small widget by Bazaarvoice (http://www.bazaarvoice.com), the company has reduced customer service contacts requirement to 81%. This is an amazing amount of cost saving through the social media.



6. IBM

IBM decided to capitalize the intelligence of its employees to let the consumers know what happens behind the screen. Thus it created a network of blogs managed by its employees including its CEO. User get to know how IBM employees work and able to build direct connections with them. When employees are writing on what they love to do, it means increased satisfaction of employees as well and the consumers who get to know that the whole company is committed to give them the best.



7. Graco

The infant and baby products company realized the value that still photographs of our kids in our life. That would have been the reason that they decided to knit their social media strategy around Flickr. They had built a community of its customers using Flickr. Later they realized that communicating the customers regarding baby care and raising kids will help them promote their products, they started Graco blog (http://blog.gracobaby.com/). The corporate blogger of Graco uses Twitter to inform about the latest updates on the blog.

The Social Media Revolution

Are you one of those who are hooked to the computer or access net daily? Then, I am sure, you are aware of social media revolution that started few years back and now has changed the direction of web traffic to a great extent.

In the year 1946, when Konrad Zuse wrote the first algorithmic programming language in the modern day computer, one would have hardly imagined the way computers will change our lives. From the room size computer to the palmtops and that in mobile phones, computers have become a necessity of our modern day life, be it home or office.

15 years back, communication was more often face to face. We all remember that our previous generation used to contact friends and family members in other city through hand written mails and waited for days and weeks to get a reply. We too have used this in the initial phase of our lives. I am sure there would not be a need for my child to write a letter in her own handwriting, thanks to emails.

The first test- email was sent by an engineer Ray Tomlinson in the year 1971. After being used in defence for several years, emails replaced the hand written mails with the advent of internet. In the year 1995, Hotmail Corporation came into being to enable people around the world send mails to each other within seconds. Our generation has witnessed this change from mail to email. The words like ‘instant’ or ‘instantaneous’ became inseparable to our communication.

When I was leaving college, I remember asking friends their email address. If I did not wish to remember any of the ‘not so friendly’ classmates, I simply lost their email address. With emails and telephones, getting in touch with someone even in the other part of the world became immediate. Each one of us would have maintained a telephone diary of important numbers and list of email addresses. Telephone diary was lead to the path of extinction by mobile phones. Emails, however, are here to stay.

The latest change came few years back when social media came into picture. My Space was one of the earliest social networking sites. Then came Facebook and many other sites. We registered ourselves to know about friends and family. There were several advantages that a networking site offered. You can search and find out the people whom you used to know and lost touch. You could share photos and send messages.

You must have sat wondering what one of your schoolmates is doing now. When you search in Facebook and you can find the schoolmate’s profile. In his photo’s you can see him holding his pocket edition in his arms. You can send a message and get back the lost touch. This is the excitement which Facebook offers to its 400 million users.

While Facebook is leader in social networking, Twitter is the most known name in microblogging. You have the flexibility of expressing yourself with 140 characters limit. The privacy norms are far less stringent. Depending on your taste and choice, you can share your views on your government’s policy to increase employment or the latest trend in fashion. Twitter has given words to our inner sensitivity. We, now, no longer hesitate in ridiculing or appreciating anyone or anything in public. It is a good forum for our over-communicated society. You can raise your voice against terrorism or raise funds for the people affected by a natural calamity.

Social networking and microblogging are just a small part of this revolution. Social media revolution is all about sharing knowledge, feelings, thoughts and your imagination. Blogs, video-sharing, photo-sharing, social bookmarking, event management and web community building- all of these tools are playing important roles in this revolution.
